KÜSAD: Preserving Collective Cultural Memory

KÜTAHYA — On December 7, 2025, KÜSAD (Kütahya Cultural and Artistic Development Association) hosted an interactive Simav Yaren Culture event, presenting the tradition’s history, social structure, and living practice through a moderated discussion, live folk performances, and a collective song. Framed as a Yaren Gathering, the program emphasized intergenerational transmission of this intangible heritage.

Now marking 40 years of activity, KÜSAD has become a central cultural actor in Kütahya, curating programs that connect folklore, performing arts, and traditional craftsmanship with contemporary dialogue. Recognized as “Most Active Art Institution of the Year” at the Eskişehir art awards, the association works with universities, artisans, and municipal partners to sustain local cultural identity through exhibitions, workshops, conferences, and research-led discussions—often hosted at the historic Germiyan Beylik Mansion.

KÜSAD’s impact extends to youth engagement as well as international exchange. In early 2025, its Young Artisans Heritage Workshop introduced students to tile painting and ceramic history, encouraging students to see themselves as future stewards of the city’s artistic legacy. The initiative not only introduced younger participants to traditional craft techniques but also sparked interest in cultural heritage careers and community involvement.

Internationally, the EU-supported “Recital of Elegance” project enabled 10 artists to travel to Italy to develop a hybrid textile-printing technique in Palermo, translating Kütahya çini motifs onto fabric. The project demonstrated how traditional craft knowledge can evolve through international partnerships while remaining rooted in local identity.

Together, all of these efforts have positioned KÜSAD as a custodian of the city’s collective cultural memory, balancing preservation with innovation.
