Kütahya Creative Cultural Industries Summit 2023: A Milestone for Türkiye’s Creative Economy

KÜTAHYA – October, 2023 — The Kütahya Creative Cultural Industries Summit 2023, held from October 19-22, brought together leading artisans, policymakers, academics, and creative entrepreneurs from around the world in an unprecedented gathering that underscored Kütahya’s growing role as a national and international hub for cultural innovation. Organized under the auspices of the Kütahya Municipality and supported by regional development institutions, the Summit marked a decisive step in advancing the city’s strategic vision as a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Arts.
The Summit’s agenda featured keynote lectures, thematic panels, sector workshops, and networking forums. These sessions offered insights into a wide range of topics such as craft innovation, digital transformation and cultural entrepreneurship as well as creative tourism and cross-sector collaboration. Speakers emphasized the need for new business models and stronger institutional networks which will ensure that Kütahya’s creative potential is fully realized.
Mapping the Future of Creativity
This year’s program offered a rich selection of discussions focused on strengthening Kütahya’s creative ecosystem.
Craft Heritage in the Age of Innovation featured experts exploring how Kütahya’s iconic çini and silversmith craftsmanship can evolve through contemporary design, new production techniques, and international branding strategies.
The enlightening panel entitled Creative Tourism: From Local Stories to Global Experiences gathered tourism specialists and city planners who discussed how initiatives like the Sır Köy Creative Cultural Industries Center can boost experiential tourism and bring visitors directly into artisan workshops.
Further dialogues focused on sector-wide challenges such as market access, export potential, and digital transformation and stressed the importance of increased cooperation between public institutions, private businesses, and creative communities.
Hands-On Workshops: Empowering Creators
Beyond expert panel discussions, practical workshops provided valuable and inspiring learning opportunities for summit attendees.
During the session Digital Tools for Craft Producers,artisans were guided on the use of 3D modeling, social media, and e-commerce with the aim of widening their target audiences.The workshop Traditional Techniques Masterclass: Çini & Ceramic Decoration featured renowned local masters offering live demonstrations and hands-on experience in traditional tile-painting techniques while the business-focused Branding & Storytelling for Creative Entrepreneurs seminar taught creators how to translate heritage into compelling brand narratives.
Other exciting highlights of the Summit, including wheel-throwing competitions, raku firing demonstrations, folk-art and craft exhibitions, Zeybek folk-dance performances and local gastronomy showcases, provided attendees with the gamut of Kütahya’s abundant cultural offerings, both traditional and novel in nature.
A Launchpad for New Ideas and Collaborations
Additionally, with the aim of calling attention to emerging initiatives, the Summit touched on fresh pursuits such as the Manises–Kütahya Exchange Program, new incubation projects including “Improving Digitalization and Creativity Ecosystem in Kütahya”, and the development of tourism routes linking Kütahya’s cultural assets with national and international networks including the European Route of Ceramics.
With its rich heritage, ambitious new projects, and a growing network of partners, Kütahya is steadily shaping its place as a key actor in Türkiye’s creative industries landscape. The Kütahya Creative Cultural Industries Summit 2023 concluded with a shared sense of momentum and purpose, not only celebrating what the city already has to offer but setting the stage for even more vibrantly innovative and globally connected projects in the years ahead.
