Kütahya and Africa: Building Bridges Through Culture, Diplomacy, and Humanitarian Work

KÜTAHYA – 26 June 2025 — The city of Kütahya is increasingly engaged with the nations of Africa—through a dynamic blend of diplomacy, humanitarian projects, and cultural exchange.

Earlier this year, Kütahya signed a sister-city agreement with Denguélé, an autonomous region in Ivory Coast. The partnership, signed by Mayor Eyüp Kahveci and Denguélé’s Minister-Governor Gaoussou Toure, aims to strengthen cooperation across culture, tourism, trade, and industry. Following the signing, the Denguélé delegation toured Kütahya, visiting historic neighborhoods, UNESCO-affiliated craft zones, and local ceramic ateliers, gaining a deeper appreciation of the city’s heritage.

Previously in 2017, the year of the city’s induction into the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Kütahya hosted the Representative of Mozambique to UNESCO, Prof. Filimone Manuel Meigos, during the Dumlupınar International Çini Festival. During meetings with local officials, both sides expressed commitment to long-term collaboration in culture, arts, and academic cooperation with Dumlupınar University. They also agreed that Mozambique would begin UCCN work through its cultural city Malota, with Kütahya and Zafer Development Agency offering consultancy and support.

Additionally, Kütahya’s outreach extends beyond diplomacy. The IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation’s local branch has funded over 130 water wells in African countries, providing clean drinking water to thousands of people. Meanwhile, Dumlupınar University celebrates African students and culture through its vibrant “Afrika Gecesi”, featuring music, dance, theater, and culinary traditions from across the continent.

Together, these initiatives demonstrate Kütahya’s dedication to building multi-dimensional bridges with Africa—combining cultural understanding, humanitarian impact, and long-term partnership.
